Time: Tuesday 2.4.2024 at 14-17 CEST followed by Democracy drinks until 19
Hybrid event: Merkki museum, Ludviginkatu 2-4, 00130 Helsinki & online (also recording).
Faktabaari Forum is the prime forum to support Faktabaari’s mission to serve fact-based public debate and digital information literacy development. This special year we celebrate Faktabaari’s 10 years anniversary and inform our friends on EDMO NORDIS second phase. We need the independent networks to defend democracy and information integrity during the historical 2024 election year.
Our event focus remains on AI and social media – we STOP, THINK and CHECK what has worked and could work in practice for informed citizens in democracies especially in Finland, Nordics and Europe, with comparison to US developments with somewhat different regulatory environment.
We kick-start with a keynote from our US quest from the Center for an Informed Public Co-Founder Jevin West, and then hear greetings from our NORDIS colleagues and EDMO partners in view of 2024 European and US elections integrity and beyond. For the anniversary we also share some highlights from the 10 elections Faktabaari has covered as a laboratory for Digital Information Literacy and modern fact-checking in Finland and beyond. Faktabaari has organized Fora on International Fact-Checking Day since 2015.
Let’s be amazed, Let’s be scared, Let’s be critical, Let’s be practical!
Without forgetting to celebrate over Democracy Drinks!

Results and aftermath
- 60 participants from 4 countries were present in our event, and around 58 paticipated online from all around the world. The general reception of the event was enthusiastic, participants representing a great number of organizations ranging from various governmental and non-profit organizations to educational institutes, newspapers and businesses.
- The insightful keynote and the following discussion with profs. Jevin West and Teemu Roos was taken as an eye-opener as to how our infosphere is changing through the rapid proliferation of AI-powered tools. West pointed out to the fact that large parts of the internet are becoming “dead” as in filled with unreliable AI-generated content.
- Pipsa Havula and Guillaume Kuster presented findings from Faktabaari & CheckFirsts research project Digivaalivahti (Digital Election Watch) on how recommendation algorithms can be used to manipulate democratic elections, with complementary perspectives by Thomas Hedin.
- Dr. Kari Kivinen’s lucid presentation on AI Literacy was particularily well received, focusing on prebunking stategies for dis- and misinformation.
- Besides the presentations, Faktabaari provided the participants an opportunity to freely network in the event, to discuss the themes and explore new cooperation possibilities. After the official event, discussions were continued in a more informal setting, to which approximately 45 participants participated.
- In general, the event resulted in disseminating information, novel perspectives to the information disorders, and well received networking opportunities to all participants. Overall the feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive.
