Faktapohjaisen yhteiskunnallisen keskustelun puolustajana Faktabaari seuraa Helsingin huippukokousta ja sen ympärillä käytävää keskustelua. (Below a brief summary and statement given in #HelsinkiCalling event in English)
Maailmanpoliittinen katse kääntyy Helsinkiin, kun Venäjän presidentti Vladimir Putin ja Yhdysvaltain presidentti Donald Trump tapaavat heinäkuun 16. päivä. Perustamme päiväksi pop-up -toimituksen. Toimitus koostuu Faktabaarin vapaaehtoisista, jotka lomailun ja työnteon ohessa käärivät hihansa tärkeän asian vuoksi.
Näin lyhyessä ajassa faktoja ei juuri pysty tarkistamaan (lue lisää toimitusprosessistamme), joten niitä tarkistetaan tarvittaessa kokouksen jälkeen. Kokouspäivän aikana jaamme jo tarkistettua tietoa sekä autamme yleisöä ja toimittajia luotettavan tiedon lähteille. Samalla aktivoimme kansalaisten kriittistä medialukutaitoa. Apunamme tässä on eri alojen kotimaisia ja ulkomaisia asiantuntijoita sekä Tilastokeskus.
Seurantaa teemme yhteistyössä kansainvälisen faktantarkistusverkoston jäsenten kanssa. Huomiomme kohteena ovat Trumpin ja Putinin puheiden ohella koti- ja ulkomaiset tiedotusvälineet sekä sosiaalinen media. Koordinoimme tällaista yhteistyötä verkoston kanssa nyt ensimmäistä kertaa. Samalla ennakoimme tulevia EU-vaaleja.
Maanantaina keräämme kaikki havaintomme ja niihin liittyvät lähdelinkit liveblogiin verkkosivuillemme. Julkaisemme jokaisen havainnon ja linkin myös some-kanavilla ja yhteistyöverkostojen kautta Twitterissä @Faktabaari ja Facebookissa.
Vaikuttavuus syntyy yhteistyöstä. Tarvitsemme myös teidän panostanne. Voit osallistua täyttämällä tarkastuspyyntölomakeen verkkosivuillamme. Meille voi vinkata tarkastettavista aiheista myös sähköpostitse toimitus(at)faktabaari.fi tai sosiaalisen median kautta #Faktabaari #TrumPutin #Helsinki2018 .

Faktabaari follows Helsinki Summit
Finnish Fact-checker Faktabaari with the support of members of International Fact-checking Network, Finnish and international experts, and Statistics Finland follows the Helsinki Summit between Presidents Trump and Putin on 16 July. We will publish a web page and tweets that report on the speeches, media coverage and social media, and provide links to reliable primary sources and earlier factchecks for the public and the media.

Avoin yhteiskunta ry statement in support of Faktabaari participation to #HelsinkiCalling:
Why Faktabaari participates #HelsinkiCalling? Why Faktabaari is Calling? 3 points:
1. Because we care
We care especially about the integrity of information and transparency, preconditions for open societies and democracy.
The TWO presidents visiting Helsinki are from this point of the two symbols of the confusing times we are living. With the attention and tools the two presidents have available, we don’t think it is exaggerated to call them “Masters of Confusion” - they divide and rule - at our digital media environment.
It is telling that even very knowledgeable experts do not know what to expect from this summit and we all need to prepare for surprises - again.
We also have to protect our minds while keeping them open. Critical thinking and privacy applied via your mobile devices are our hands-on contributions. Faktabaari serves and empowers you with fact-checks and awareness building tools in the digital environment. You decide what you share. Facts matter.
2. Role of fact-checking
Linked both to the activities of the two presidents and development of Internet (esp. social media) the role of fact-checking seems to be changing towards empowering your critical thinking**.** Governments and responsible businesses have naturally also a role\, but finally it is you\, because you share and hopefully care.
Nowadays also sometimes factchecks appear also as sanity or reality checks, when we hear actors like these two presidents confusing us.
One practical thing you can do is to avoid labelling things as “Fake news” like Trump and Putin teaches you.Systematically labeling things with such vague terms our brains risk resisting also quality news, true journalism and fact checking. (A much better anaytical framework is Information Disorder report by @FirstDraftNews).
**3. Our third and final point on Europe **
Prominent Helsingin Sanomat journalists reminded rightly today on the role of Europe in the summit. (represented only by the host country and President Niinistö). We raised in our #TrumputinHelsinki campaign photo (see above) a photo collage of Jalta summit 1945 where also Europe was divided among Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill.
I don’t know if the the HS journalists referred to us when referring to this historical event, but our photo collage reminds us that the same thing could happen tomorrow in Helsinki if these “Masters of Confusion” will use all their capacity to divide Europe.
Next major test is the European elections May 2019. We suggest to follow the US 2016 election hacking debate from the point of view what could happen 2019 in EU elections?
We belieive with all its problems, EU still represents the democratic solution. This is why it is also an existential problem for the TWO presidents. Do you like or not EU co-operation, do care and participate the 2019 elections. That will also be the Faktabaari main thematic focus with European/Global network.because we here care on democracy and open societies. Don’t we?
